Sammie Lee Layne

Sammie, 83, of Roachdale, passed away Wednesday, July 6, 2022 at home surrounded by his loving family.  Visitation will be held 4:00-8:00 pm, Friday, July 8, 2022 at WHITESTONE CHRISTIAN CHURCH located at 8045 US-36, New Winchester, with the funeral service at 12:00 pm Saturday, July 9, 2022 with an hour of visitation prior, also at the church.  Burial will follow in Danville South Cemetery.  Those wishing to send flowers may have them sent directly to the church.

Sammie was born October 5, 1938 to the late John and Thelma (Chatham) Layne.  He graduated from New Winchester High School with the class of 1957.  Following graduation, he received a certificate from Purdue University’s Agricultural Program.  On May 29, 1959 he married his high school sweetheart and best friend, Jeanie Layne.  Sammie was the owner and operator of Layne Farms where he tended to various crops and livestock for beef, pork and dairy products.  Sammie also started Layne Trucking Inc in 1985, retiring in 2000.  Sammie was a founding member of Whitestone Christian Church as well as an Elder, a Mason with the Groveland Lodge #542, served on the Board of Directors for the Ladoga Childrens’ home.  He enjoyed traveling with Jeanie in their RV. Sammie never knew a stranger and most of them became friends.  The hobby he enjoyed most was being with his family.

Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Jeanie (Gibbons) Layne, 3 children, John (Deborah Rushton) Layne of Danville, Michael (Connie) Layne of Waterford, WI, Kristine (Michael) McNulty of Danville; 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; sister Juanita Clark, and brother’s-in-law, Darrel Smith and Darwin DeLaughter. Sammie is predeceased by his sisters, Marguerite Smith and Valeria May DeLaughter and brother-in-law, Taylor Clark.
