Maude E. Phillips, 91, of Vincennes, IN passed away on September 17, 2022 at the Gentle Care Nursing Home in Vincennes. She was born in Greenbrier, Tennessee on December 8, 1930 to the late John and Martha (Austin) Taylor. She was the fourth oldest of 14 children, 4 boys and 10 girls.
Maude was very ambitious, armed with only a third-grade education, she started her career as a waitress in the Officers Club. In 1966 she had the opportunity to buy the Friendly Inn Restaurant in Belleville, IN. During the construction of Interstate 70, Maude watched as other businesses struggled to keep their doors open. She worked very hard and was able to keep her doors open, even tripling her business during those unpredictable times. Maude later sold the restaurant in 1985, following the death of her son Michael, deciding to spend more time with her family.
Maude is survived by her son, Dale Freeman Arnold of Antioch, TN, 2 granddaughters, Wendi Arnold Hester and Alisha Arnold Lester, and 6 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Phillips, son, Michael Stacy Arnold and grandson, Michael David Arnold.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 27, 2022 from 11:00 am until the time of service at 1:00 pm at the WEAVER & RANDOLPH FUNERAL HOME, CLAYTON. Burial will follow in Clayton Cemetery.
