Marthalou (Grimes) Thompson, 84, of Danville, passed on March 22, 2025 at home with close family and her beloved dog, Chia. She was born in Darlington on December 7, 1940, daughter of the late Virgil and Mary (Hopkins) Grimes. In addition to her parents, Marthalou is preceded in death by her brother Allen and dear sister Ann.
Marthalou grew up on a farm and graduated from Darlington High School, Class of 1958. There she met the love of her life, Loris Thompson, and they were wed on December 8, 1962. They lived near Crawfordsville, raising their young family in the country where Marthalou kept a huge garden, canning and freezing delicious produce and enjoyed fun activities like square dancing. She belonged to the Eastern Star and became a worthy patron in 1962.
The family moved to Danville in 1974 where Marthalou quickly became involved in the community, active in organizations like Welcome Wagon and Tri Kappa. She was a valued member of the United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir, played in the bell choir, was active in UMC Women and volunteered at the food pantry. When her children were older, she started a new career at the county Prosecutor’s Office, working in child support, a role she was dedicated to until her retirement at age 72. Marthalou loved to entertain family and friends, enjoyed quilting and was always happy to go on adventures.
The greatest joy of Marthalou’s life was her family. She loved being a mother and participated fully in every activity, sport and interest of her children; they always felt her love and support. As much as she loved being Mom, she was truly delighted by being Grandma. Her grandkids have countless happy memories of baking cookies, playing games, shopping for school clothes, and family vacations.
Marthalou is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Loris “Tommy” Thompson; her children and their spouses Krista Thompson and Tom Huleatt; Kevin and Pam (Earnest) Thompson; and Katy (Thompson) and David Shreve; grandchildren Jeff Huleatt and Alicja Cygan, and Stella Huleatt; Kyle and Paige Thompson; Owen and Spencer Shreve; great-grandson, Eryk Huleatt; and sister-in-law, Susan (Thompson) Long.
Her family will welcome visitors on Friday, March 28 from 4:00pm-8:00pm at Danville United Methodist Church. Her funeral service will also be held at Danville UMC the following day, Saturday, March 29, with another visitation from 11:00am-12:00pm, and the service at 12:00pm followed by lunch. Burial will be at St. James Lutheran Cemetery, Darlington, starting at 4:00pm.
