Leon, 89, passed away Wednesday evening at Plainfield Healthcare. A graveside service will be held 11:00 am Wednesday, August 26, 2020 at Lincoln Memory Gardens in Whitestown, Indiana, where he will be laid to rest next to his dear wife of 62 years, Georgia.
He was born in Indianapolis to the late Carl and Bertha (Haeberle) Childers. Leon grew up in Indianapolis, graduating from Arsenal Technical High School with the class of 1949. Wanting to serve his country, he enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve in 1950, serving two terms of duty until being discharged in 1962. Leon married Georgia Swineford Nov. 7, 1954, she preceded him in death Mar. 24, 2016. He was a member of St. Marks Lutheran Church in Indianapolis, as well as a member and former president of the long running Footlight Musicals in Indianapolis. Leon was a gifted jewlery maker and die cutter for the Herff-Jones Company in Indianapolis for 46 years, retiring in 1995.
Leon is survived by his daughters, Katrina (John) Schierenberg - Texas, Tonya (Richard) Longwell - Indianapolis, Jennifer (Mike) Farmer - Mooresville, Lonna (Bob) Washo - Illinois, 10 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by an infant son, Leon A. Childers, Jr., and a brother and sister, Carl Childers and Leatha Childers.
