Larry G. Downing, 74, of Danville, passed away Friday, August 16, 2024, at home, surrounded by his family. He was born in Clinton, Indiana, a son of the late Clyde and Pauline (Wheeler) Downing. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two sisters, Diane Komlanc and Denise Byers, and two brothers, Richard Downing and David Downing.
Larry grew up in Indianapolis. Following high school, he enlisted in the United States Army where he was a weapons specialist. He enjoyed helping friends and family. He could fix anything, like his father, a real handyman. Often thought of as “their rock” the family looked to him for support, you could count on him for almost anything.
Larry had worked at Oak Motors for a time, transferring cars, most of his time was spent working at the Kroger on 38th street, keeping the store stocked and up to date. In his off time, he loved to fish. A favorite fishing hole was in Jasonville at Downing Lake, named after his uncle, who’d caught the biggest fish at that time. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends at regular Colt’s games and attending the Indy 500. He was a loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend who will be dearly missed.
Larry is survived by his daughter, Christina Downing; one grandchild and three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Debra Coffman and Anna Collings both of Danville; several nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members.
The family will receive friends on Friday, August 23, 2024, at Helton & Harris Funeral Home in CLAYTON, from 11 a.m. to 1p.m., with a funeral service beginning at 1 p.m. Burial will follow in Danville South Cemetery.
