She was born in Lee County, Virginia to the late Charles E. and Ollie O. (Kimberling) Lawson. Avis married Everett Whitaker, Jr. in 1955, he preceded her in death in 1965. She later married Edgar Ray "Mike" Land, who also preceded her in death. In 1969, Avis married John W. Lilley Jr., he preceded her in death in 2006. Avis was a "homemaker" in the true since of the word. She loved and provided for her family in so many ways; they were the love of her life. Aside from being a great cook, sometimes using recipes from the food network, Avis held many different jobs during her life. Avis served in healthcare at the former National Nursing Home and the Hendricks County Home. She had been employed at the old Dog-N-Suds, Coffee Cup, and Max & Dee's restaurants, as well as managing the Danville and Self-Clean Laundry Mats, and the Hendricks County 4-H Fairgounds. She was even "Mom" to those that were not hers. In her "spare-time", Avis enjoyed her flowers and garden, feeding birds, mushroom hunting and doing puzzles. She attended Calvary Chapel of Danville.

Survivors include her children, Ray (Kelly) Whitaker, Sr., Rachel Collier (Willie), Randy (Ellen) Whitaker, Ranita "Peach" (Jay) Clark, all of Danville, Ralph A. (Chris) Whitaker - North Salem, John W. (Beth) Lilley III - Pendleton, IN., John David Lilley - Indianapolis. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Paula Ruhl. Also surviving are 18 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, brother, Charles (Pauline) Lawson, Jr., sister, Geneva Spears, brothers-in-law, John Spears and Raymond Whitaker, and nieces and nephews.

Contributions may be given to the Hendricks County 4-H Fair Association, P.O. Box 7, Danville, IN. 46122 in memory of Avis.
